MODAYIL POTHEN- (See Ch. 3 Para 6-19, Pp 59 – 68 of Modayil Kudumba Charithram written by the late Mr. Philip Ninan B.A. , L.T. , Retd. High School Head Master during 1973 – 74). He married Annamma/ Andamamma from Kakkudy family in Vennikulam. She was a noble and efficient house wife, reputed for her kind and charitable disposition and unflinching faith in God. They had 4 sons and 5 daughters.

Sons of Modayil Pothen:

  • Modayil Chacko, Married from Mavilla family in Mallappally. He died without leaving a progeny.
  • Modayil Koipurathu Oommen, married thrice, first from a catholic family, Powathil in Kurumbanadom. Second Vattassery Methran’s sister from Kolathu- Kalathil family in Kurichi. There was no progeny in both marriages.Third, Kalyani/ Maria, who was the daughter of Chathu Menon (who translated the Bible from English to Malayalam, see para 16 and the note Pp 65 & 66 of Modayil Kudumba Charithram) who on conversion to Christianity adopted the name Joseph Fenn. They lived in Koipurathu House on the banks of Manimala river in Mallappally. Thet had 5 sons and one daughter.
  • Modayil Padinjarekoottu Varghese, was also called by the pet name “Valiakunju”. He married Annamma from Mannaparambil family in Puthupally and they lived in Padinjarekoottu House near the punja in Mallappally. They had 8 sons and one daughter.
  • Modayil Kizhakekoottu Pothen, was also known by the pet name ” Kochukunju”. He married Achamma from the Pullampilayil family in Aymanam, Kottayam. They had 5 sons and two daughters.

Daughters of Modayil Pothen:

  • Eldest daughter was married into the Vetteeparampil family in Vakathanam.
  • Achiamma was married into the Kuzhiyadithra family in Puthupally, Kottayam.
  • Kandamma was married into the Karakkattu family in Kottayam.
  • Maria was married into the Puthenpurackal family in Aymanam, Kottayam.
  • Ailey was married into the Pullampilayil family in Aymanam, Kottayam.

Sons of Modayil Koipurathu Oommen:

  • Nedungadappallil Koipurathu Pothen married from the Kannukuzhy family in Puthupally. They had 6 sons and one daughter.
  • Adavimannathu Ouseph married the sister of Madavana Ittiyerah Magistrate of Thalavady. They had 5 sons and 2 daughters.
  • Koipurathu Chacko was also known as “Chacko Aasaan” well versed in Tamil ,Syriac, Sanskrit and English. He was a teacher for a long time in the Attarumankal L P School in Mallappally. He married Chechamma from the Paikkattu family in Mundakayam. They had 2 sons and three daughters.
  • Manjathanam Oommen married Mariamma from the Chundamannil family in Kumbanadu. He was an expert in agriculture and business. Once on a return journey from Alleppy , he stayed in his brother’s brother-in-law’s house, viz Madavana in Thalavady and following sudden illness, died there.He was buried in the cemetery of Thalavady C M S Church. At the time of his death, he had a 2 year old son. The widow was re-married into Manichira Putherpurackal in Karuvatta.
  • 5. Koipurathu (Meenadathu) Varghese, (AD 1855-1921). After completion of his studies in the English School in Mallappally, he worked as Evangelist in CMS. He married Annamma from Vettikottu family in Meenadom and resided there. They had five sons and four daughters.

Daughter of Modayil Koippurathu Oommen:

  • The only daughter Mariamma was married into the Puthenpurackal family in Puthuppally and died without leaving any offspring.

Sons of Modayil Padinjarekoottu Varghese:

  • Vazheparampil Philipose (AD 1848- 1913), married Mariamma of Thottunkal family in Varikkattu, Tiruvalla. He was endowed with extra ordinary physical strength. He could overpower a buffalo that attacked him by twisting its neck. Mariamma was too strong and well built. She never suffered from any illness, till her death at the ripe old age of 96 years. They had four sons and four daughters (See Part III, Ch. 1, Para. 6, P. 36) of the Kudumbacharithram).
  • Kavil Iype married Achiamma, D/o. Rev, Tharyan of Parambil family in Mavelikkara. He was the first member of our family who had received English education and got a government job. He had one son and three daughters (See Para 24, P 89 of the Kudumbacharithram).
  • Nedungadappallil Chacko married from Airampallil family in Kallooppara. They had five sons and two daughters.
  • Puthenpurackal Varghese married Mariamma, D/o. Powathikunnel Palliyekunnel Philipochen. They had three sons and three daughters (See Para 21-27, Pp 69-72 of the Kudumbacharithram).
  • Adavimannam Oommen (AD 1866 – 1922) married Achiyamma (AD 1870- 1953), D/o. Vengal Iype from Amichakary. They had six sons and four daughters.
  • Mavunkal Yohannan (AD 1868- 1925) married Mariamma (AD 1870- 1953), D/o. Ambattu Chackochan of Punnavely. They had five sons and five daughters.
  • Manjathanathu Kurien married Akkamma from Kayyalathu Attarumankal family in Mallappally. They had only one daughter.
  • Modayil Samuel married Sosamma, D/o. Powathikunnel Akkaraparambil Avirachen. They had no offspring.

Daughter of Modayil Padinjarekoottu Varghese:

  • The only daughter Mariamma was married into Vazheparambil family in Vakathanam.

Sons of Modayil Kizhakekoottu Pothen:

  • Adavimannam Thazhathekoottu Mathai (AD 1848- 1893), married Achiyamma from Thannickal family in Kottayam and she died in 1940. They had three sons and five daughters.
  • Melathekoottu Chacko married Rahelamma who was the aunt of Ayroor Kurudamannil Mar Mathews Athanasios Metropolitan of Marthoma Church. They had two sons and one daughter.
  • Thazhathekoottu Varghese died at the ripe old age of 85. He was a zealous and devout Christian. He had served as a trustee of the CSI church, Nedungadappally. He had donated the whole land for the construction of the CSI church, Ponnirikumpara for the Christian converts from the backward castes (See Para 38, P 78 of the Kudumbacharithram). He married Kocheliyamma D/o. Punnoochen, Pulimootil, Tirivalla and sister of P Cherian, Travancore High Court Judge. They had five sons and four daughters.
  • Modayil Pothen (Jr), (AD 1874- 1964), was s devout and zealous Christian. He greatly valued Christian fellowship and prayer meetings. He spent a great deal of money and time for gospel work. Most of his time was spent for reading and meditating the Bible. He married Mariamma, the sister of famous Kurumthottickal Achen of Kozhenchery (AD 1878- 1959). They had one son and five daughters.
  • One son died in childhood.

Daughters of Modayil Kizhakekoottu Pothen:

  • One daughter died during the childhood time.
  • Seond daughter Mariamma was married to Mathoochen of Kovoor family in Tiruvalla. Er. K M Ninan, B.E. and E M Kovoor, B.A., B.L. are Mariamma’s sons. Thankamma w/o. Dr. M J Philip, Modayil Muthiramala is the daughter of Er. K M Ninan).
